Storage Gateway connects on-premises applications to AWS storage through a local appliance. Choose by the interface the servers already use: file shares over NFS or SMB (S3 File Gateway), iSCSI block volumes (Volume Gateway), or backup software that writes to tape (Tape Gateway). FSx File Gateway is no longer available to new customers.
File gateways
S3 File Gateway presents NFS (v3 and 4.1) and SMB (v2 and 3) file shares. The files are stored as objects in Amazon S3, so you can manage them with lifecycle policies, Cross-Region Replication and versioning, and other AWS services can read them directly. A local cache gives low-latency access to recent data.
FSx File Gateway gave on-premises SMB access, with a local cache, to Amazon FSx for Windows File Server shares. AWS says it is no longer available to new customers. Existing customers can keep using it.
Volume Gateway
Volume Gateway presents cloud-backed volumes that servers mount as iSCSI devices.
With cached volumes, the data lives in Amazon S3 and frequently accessed data is kept locally. This saves on primary storage while recent data stays fast.
With stored volumes, all the data stays on premises and point-in-time snapshots are backed up to Amazon S3 asynchronously. Use stored volumes when the application needs low-latency access to the whole dataset. You can recover the snapshots on premises or to Amazon EC2.
Tape Gateway and deployment
Tape Gateway gives backup software a virtual tape library. Tapes are archived in S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval or S3 Glacier Deep Archive, which removes physical tapes, courier costs and tape hardware. The backup software does not need to change.
Any gateway can run on premises as a VM on VMware ESXi, KVM, Microsoft Hyper-V or Nutanix AHV, as a hardware appliance, or in AWS as an Amazon EC2 instance. A gateway on EC2 suits disaster recovery, data mirroring and storage for applications already on EC2.
Where the exam catches people
Believing Volume Gateway presents NFS or SMB shares: it presents iSCSI block volumes. File shares come from a file gateway.
Believing cached and stored volumes keep the same data locally: cached keeps only frequently accessed data locally, and stored keeps the full dataset locally.
Believing tape-based backup software must be replaced to use AWS: Tape Gateway presents virtual tapes to the same software.
Believing a gateway must run on customer hardware: it can also run as an Amazon EC2 instance.
Believing FSx File Gateway is a current choice for a new design: AWS says it is no longer available to new customers.
